Romanoffs Housed Plainly in Tobolsk Exile
In Tobolsk the former imperial Romanoffs live in a stark two story brick house stripped of comforts. Nicholas and Alexandra Romanoff endure a frugal, guarded life with limited outings and minimal contact, while guards and officials monitor all movements and mail.

Repartee and Proposals in a Quiet Household
A humorous dialogue from Boys’ Life features a doctor urging a widow to remarry, a houseful of car pets and rugs, a boy’s misdirected answer about a birth or marriage in the paper, and an agent testing a boy at the gate with a mistaken assumption about his mother’s presence. The scene blends wit and domestic banter in a light, period voice.
Mouth Decorations Across Cultures
The piece notes how beauty standards differ by country. In Japan gold teeth are admired among professionals, in India red-stained teeth are favored, while in parts of Sumatra some women remove front teeth entirely and suppress them if they reappear.

Waterproofing Concrete with Zinc Sulphate Solution
To stop leakage through concrete such as tunnel walls, clean the walls thoroughly and apply a solution of eight and three quarter pounds of zinc sulphate dissolved in a gallon of water. The zinc sulphate reacts with lime in the cement forming insoluble calcium sulphate and lime hydroxide, filling the pores in the concrete.
Some Heat Regulates Climate Across Britain and Ireland
The gulf stream is described as delivering immense warmth, potentially moving a river of metal the size of the Mississippi and lifting air temperatures over Britain and France from winter to summer. Fogs in England are attributed largely to it, and western Ireland experiences milder coastal temperatures than the east by about two degrees.
