Crop vigor aids in holding soils

F. W. Schaller of Iowa State College notes vegetation strengthens erosion control. A thick plant cover reduces run-off and soil loss by cushioning raindrop impact, slowing moving water, and anchoring soil with roots and crop residues. Thin cover, by contrast, offers little protection.

Improving Soil Filth for Better Rainfall Absorption and Erosion Protection

Schaller notes erosion protection depends on plant cover density, thickness, and total growth. Dense grass legume mixes provide the strongest protection, while raw crops offer less. Vigorous, fast growing, high yielding crops maximize protection, achievable on fertile soils or with adequate fertilizer.
