Pella area farms battle grasshopper invasion in corn and beans
Grasshoppers swarm fields from Pella to Marion and Warren Counties spreading from oats into corn and bean crops. Dieldrin spraying by Ernie Glenn using a Stearman biplane targets tall corn while rains boost growth and yields. Farms report heavier infestations south of the Des Moines River with beans also affected.

Confining layers stops poultry lice in Iowa flocks
W R Whitefield of Iowa State College reports that confinement of laying flocks with young birds isolated from older hens is eliminating poultry lice in the Iowa Poultry Demonstration Flock program. In 1945 about half the demonstration flocks showed lice problems before confinement was adopted as wartime efficiency measure.

Flock Confinement Adoption at 34 Percent
Stration flock owners had adopted full confinement. Only 34 percent of flocks are fully confined, reflecting slow uptake of confinement practices among producers and ongoing debates over animal welfare and farm management.

Lice Control by Confinement Plan Cited in Poultry Flocks
Whitfield says complete confinement and separation of young birds from older hens eliminates lice. In demonstrations since 1951 all flocks under confinement reported no lice, and only 16 percent of those with partial confinement did. Old hens moved to market carry lice away, while infested birds must be kept isolated to prevent spread to pullets.

Legume Seed Quality Affects Field Stand Observations
Iowa State College seed testing chief L E Everson says legume stand quality reveals seed quality. High quality seed at 9 pounds per acre drops 55 seeds per square foot with over 90 percent germination, versus bargain seed with 84 percent purity and 65 percent germination yielding only 46 viable seeds per square foot.

Seed quality and seedling counts for better stands
Everson explains that high quality seed yields about 26 seedlings per square foot while low quality seed yields roughly 10 per square foot. He urges checking last spring’s seed quality to improve next year’s stand and profits.
