Automation in Cattle Feeding on the Van der Hart Farm
The Van Der Hart Brothers Jim and Jake operate an ultra modern automatic cattle feeding system five miles east of Peoria for 325 head. The system uses a conveyor to distribute mix from a mill fed by three silos with corn and silage, plus a long auger run and central bunk discharge. The farm spans 500 acres with two other lots totaling 350 cattle and features movable gates and holding pens for efficient sorting. The brothers, married with children, began this mechanized setup around 1955 after buying land four years earlier and started feeding cattle in November.
