Fewer Iowa dairy herds infected with brucellosis
Iowa cattlemen have cut brucellosis infection in dairy herds by over 25 percent in the past year. Dr. John B. Herrick of Iowa State College notes 4.6 percent of cattle tested in early 1965 were infected vs 6.3 percent in early 1954. He urges county brucellosis committees to push toward statewide certification and notes eradication requires tackling swine as well as cattle. Brucellosis also poses a human health risk, known as undulant fever in people.

160 Acre Farm Remains Popular Despite Cost Economies
Farm economists at Town State College report farmers expect 160 acre farms to stay common for years. Earl O Heady notes operators see cost economies in larger units and many believe the current scale will endure despite potential lower unit costs from bigger operations.

Economists say farm size grows slowly despite gains
Heady notes farmers limit farm size due to risk and uncertain returns. Costs from larger units are not enough to justify bigger holds, and many farmers are content with their current living from existing farms. They avoid borrowing to expand, though gradual growth toward 200 and 240 acre farms is expected. Wealthier owners may consolidate.
Rotational Grazing Advantages and Field Findings
Rotational grazing can raise pasture carrying capacity versus continuous grazing and sits between drylot clipping and continuous grazing. J M Scholl from Iowa State College notes labor and equipment savings, with similar per animal performance across systems if forage quality is high. In a 66 day Iowa trial, Hereford steers on rotational grazing produced 202 pounds per acre, gaining 1.73 pounds daily as cattle moved every 4 to 7 days, with clipping after each move to even grazing.
