Fourth of July activities and savings drive report

Residents enjoyed picnics trips and park outings across towns and lakes including Arnolds Park Spirit Lake OsKaloosa and Newton while others attended stock car races and boat rides. The Roseren Savings Bond Week featured a Bell viewing and payroll deductions with 230 of 408 employees participating for an average 14.18 monthly totaling 3247.35 set aside for bonds.

Mahaska County Jersey Herds Rated by Club Classifier

In Mahaska County, Jersey herds owned by Herbert Hoover and Claire Werner were classified by the American Jersey Cattle Club. The evaluation, using a 100 point scale, covered unclassified cows with calves and bulls over two years, by Professor M. J. Regan. Of 120 animals, six rated Good, four Good Plus, and two Good. Werner's seventeen animals: two Excellent, one Very Good, and Good Plus.

Red Spiders Attack Iowa Evergreens Threatening Trees

Entomologist Harold Gunderson of Iowa State College warns red spiders, a yellowish red mite, are damaging evergreens in Iowa. Infestations cause white to light green brittle needles and a bronzing effect. Control includes strong water sprays, nicotine sulfate dust for small plantings, and lime sulfur solutions for larger stands, applied during hot dry weather to reduce moisture loss.

Legion to Present Replica of Statue of Liberty to Iowa

The Iowa American Legion plans to present an eight foot four inch replica of the Statue of Liberty on July 23 on the State House grounds. The copper statue, mounted on a five foot base for a total height around 13 feet, will be presented by Marshall Camp with Governor Beardsley to accept. Jack P. Whitaker sponsors the project. Cub and Boy Scouts from across Iowa will attend, with Legion Posts providing transportation to Des Moines.

Crash at Emmetsburg injures no one

John Thompson escaped unhurt when a gasoline line tank wagon he was driving crashed at Emmetsburg. The incident involved a tank wagon and caused minor roadway disruption as emergency crews responded. Police are investigating the cause of the crash and whether any charges will follow.
