Paradoxes of Dutch Life According to Duke of Baena
A scholarly reflection on Holland’s paradoxes. The Dutch balance liberty with rigid conventions, showing citizen loyalty to the Queen yet not subservience, republican sympathy for monarchy, tolerance paired with fanaticism, thrift with generosity, and a persistent drive for freedom amid crowded living. The essay notes the clash of independence and restraint and cites a 19th century Dutchwoman on universal proximity in Holland.
