Crop Prospects Favorable in June Reports and Cautions

Iowa farm prospects on June 1 show spring crops in strong shape with excellent moisture and corn planting near the 1941 level, while hay is less hopeful. Corn condition at 90 percent marks a high since 1941, oats may reach 289.76 million bushels if realized, and winter wheat production is pegged around 12 million. Tame hay may be lower than last year as hot windy weather drains moisture, threatening pastures and early crops.

Use Portable Wallow To Treat Hog Mange

A portable hog wallow 6 by 10 feet filled with lime sulfur solution treats mange in spring pigs. Iowa State College swine expert E L Quaife says such wallows save labor and fit clean pasture feeding. Plans are available at the college. a 66 by 10 foot wallow handles about 100 hogs. If more hogs exist, build multiple wallows rather than one larger. A solution of one gallon lime sulfur to 25 gallons water clears mange or prevents it. The wallow may be filled with plain water when no mange is present for cooling. Some farmers add used crankcase oil to the top to keep hair and skin in good condition, though oil should be used with caution in hot weather to avoid burns.

Contouring and Terracing Help Iowa Farmers

Soil conservationist G. M. Browning of Iowa State College reports heavy rains caused extensive corn damage and topsoil loss across many counties. Terraces and contouring, properly built, reduce runoff, but many farms suffered due to misaligned rows and inadequate terrace height, even on slopes as gentle as four to six percent.
