Garden thinning and feeding for higher yields

June garden practices recommend thinning and fertilizing to boost yields. Extension horticulturist Ben Vance of Iowa State College advises thinning carrot, lettuce and beet seedlings with specific spacing and fertilizing cabbage broccoli and tomatoes by banding fertilizer around each plant then mixing into the soil.

Proper Side Dressing For Row Vegetables

The guide advises side dressing about 3 inches from the plants and 2 to 3 inches deep. For complete fertilizer like 8-8-8 apply 2 tablespoons per plant. Sprinkle about a pound on each side of a 100-foot row to control weeds. Vance favors a sharp hoe as the best tool, warns against deep cultivation that could injure feeder roots.
