Keep Young and Old Birds Apart in Poultry Flocks

W R Whitfield extension poultry specialist at Town State College says separating young stock from laying hens is more effective than delousing powders and tonics. He advises yarding young birds on clean range in summer and housing pullets separately in clean houses during laying season to break disease life cycles and reduce contamination. A cobblestone runway in front of the laying house provides outdoors access with minimal contact with contaminated surroundings.

War Production Board to hasten national war effort

The President created a War Production Board led by Don L. M. Nelson to direct war procurement and production across agencies. He urged continuous operation 24 hours a day and expansion of facilities. OPM officials plan to double and triple the workforce with more women and to keep aliens in war plants unless secrecy is required. A plan to reserve one percent of materials for small manufacturers was proposed to sustain plants during conversion. Mayors were urged to register manufacturers with the new division and aggressively pursue war contracts. The Navy reported sinking five enemy ships in the Far East and allied vessels attacked by Axis subs off Long Island. MacArthur reported heavy fighting in the Philippines with low U.S. losses. Army plans include boosting strength to 3.6 million, doubling combat and armored units, adding 32 motorized divisions, creating 50 more military police, expanding training centers, and opening five temporary camps. The draft will raise privates attending officer schools and lowering aviation cadet age to 18. Deferments will be reexamined to minimize family disruption.
