Soil Conservation Districts in Marion County a Successful Year
Marion County Soil Conservation District reported a strong year in 1964 led by William G. Davis of the Soil Conservation Service. Fifty farmers pursued long term conservation plans emphasizing soil capability and farm enterprise, with erosion control, crop rotation, and land use improvements boosting income and wildlife habitat. The district lists extensive practices including 30,000 feet of gradient terraces and 37 livestock ponds, plus bench terraces on the Jenkins farm. An English Creek watershed field day drew about 400 visitors as planning moves toward a Public Law 566 project, with surveys planned to weigh costs against benefits before a broader plan is developed by locals.
