Switch Calf From Dam to Nipple Bucket
Dairyman Dwight Espe of Town State College advises switching a five day old calf from dam milk to a nipple or sucker pail to ease transition. With warm water in a starter pail, the calf learns to drink in a few days. An 85 pound calf needs about 1 1/2 quarts per feed twice daily, reduced if Jersey milk is used. A low milk plan uses a palatable grain starter mix and vitamin supplements. feeder recommendations include ground corn, oats, bran, linseed or soybean meal, salt, bone meal, irradiated yeast, and cod liver oil for vitamins A and D. Calves should receive liberal milk for veal and protein before four weeks, with gradual hay intake to four pounds daily.
