Capital Gain Ruling Applies To Livestock Farmers

Farmers filing income tax estimates by January 15 should note that dairy breeding and work stock can be capital assets in the farm business whether raised or purchased. Only 50 percent of capital gains are taxed and the gains face a 25 percent tax, with losses fully deductible. Compare cattle sold from the breeding herd to replacements this year to identify capital asset sales and, if uncertain, select the highest priced animal sales for record.
