Galesburg residents, including Mr and Mrs Bill Hendricks and family, visited Newton shoppers and hosted birthdays. Campbell and Terpstra families joined guests at multiple homes, with Christmas programs at McKinney and Rose Till schools. Residents, shoppers, and teachers shared visits and a festive week ending with a school program and lunch.
High school juniors and seniors hosted a surprise party for William Messemaker at Harriet Wise’s residence on Friday evening. Twelve guests attended and William received many gifts.
The Cordova farmers union met at the Neal Kuiken home Wednesday night with a good crowd. Freshments followed the business session. The next meeting will be at the Gerrit Van der Wal home. The Fifield school closed for a week’s vacation. Funeral attendees gathered at Otley for Jacob Wouda Thursday. Local visits included Mrs. Bloodsworth with Mrs. Vande Kieft and Mrs. Zegers with Mrs. Hart grave, plus Bartus Klyn joint trip to Iowa City to see Norman Robus in hospital. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Local churches and the Christian school presented holiday programs with cantatas readings and songs last week. Children enjoyed Santa Claus candy bags after the grade school performance, while families hosted Christmas dinners with relatives from nearby towns.
Slaughtering of cattle will resume this week at the Mid West Packing Co plant in Albia. The plant received word of an allotment of 1,500 of the 5,700 head of cattle assigned to Iowa for December. The move brings work for 50 employees and relief laborers as carcasses will be canned at Pella. County relief officials expect cattle to move by Wednesday, though sources could not confirm sources or origins. The revised plan follows Albia civic leaders and state officials pressing Washington after a ruling that Iowa would face no further drought relief slaughter. The Albia plant’s capacity exceeds 1,000 weekly, with work likely lasting about 10 days, and no quotas for future months announced. Governor Herring protested the earlier discrimination against Iowa. Officials continue efforts to extend the program in Iowa.
A twenty dollar bill, given by a customer for a stove, lay under snow in Boyd Brewer's yard for more than two weeks. He misplaced it while unlocking his car, and it rode the running board home. It was found Monday morning when the snow had melted and the ground dried.

The airliner, famed for its derby finishes, crashed near Rutba Wells in Iraq during a thunderstorm while attempting a Christmas mail flight.
Jerry Wells and Mecan Moore of Chariton tied 62 hamburgers in a bite for bite eating contest at B and M lunch stand on East Court Ave. They ate 31 sandwiches each, Wells drinking more with 21 glasses of water, two bottles of pop and extra items. Moore consumed 21 waters, four ice cream cartons and varied toppings.
