Monroe County notes report Bart Downs of the local fire department was badly injured while fighting a blaze at the D. E B. Wynes residence. He strained his back on a roof swing and collapsed after reaching the ground. He regained consciousness and is expected to recover, with a large family surviving. A fuller obituary is promised in the Record this week.
A J Sutton 96 longtime Indianola resident died at 7 16 am at his daughter Mrs R K Fawcett east First avenue after pneumonia illness. Funeral likely at Baptist church Thursday at 2 pm. Born Clarksville West Virginia he moved to Iowa in early life and farmed south of Pleasantville for 25 years.
Indianola Tribune reports four horses killed as a barn at Green Bay Lumber yard burned Sunday evening between 7 and 8 o clock. It is the second Green Bay barn to burn in seven months with origin undetermined. Fire likely started by loungers near hay. eye witnesses also saw people near the barn shortly before discovery. Possible electric short circuit mentioned as a theory, with alarm delayed due to light plant phone bell failure. Local observers Carl Black and Kennard Baer alerted fire crews.
Latta, manager of the Green Bay, notified directly, reached the barn before the fire truck. He and other employees entered to free the horses but found one horse already on fire and smoke and flames filling the building forced them to withdraw.
Dale Dykstra eight year old son of Mr and Mrs Joe Dykstra of 802 South A street was run down Tuesday at 1 PM at A street and High avenue when struck by a truck driven by Harnest Ballinger turning onto South A from High. He suffered hip bruises and minor cuts and bruises. He was examined by Dr J Jarvis then returned home to rest in pain.
Chariton Leader reports a man visiting local blade shops last week and offering two packages of safety razor blades saying his wife bought the wrong brand. He asked to swap one package for his preferred blade and keep 50 cents, but the wife had bought no blades. Sheriff H. J. Engebretsen pursued the suspect, who vanished.
Sigourney Review reports Ernest Garrett sues the state highway commission for 1400 damages from summer road work. Attorneys Hamilton and Updegraff for Garrett. Additional suits include John Niman executor seeking 15000 for land cut by new 149 project, Samuel Brower 3290, and Jake Herman damages for farmland along 149 near Webster.
Fred C. Wood of 2220 East Thirteenth Street Des Moines a Chariton resident for years and a barber here was fatally injured in Chariton area as a result of a deadly incident.
Mr. Wood, 80, was struck by a street car near East 12th and Grand Ave last Wednesday. Funeral held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Capitol Hill Church of Christ in Des Moines, where he was an elder. Rev. DeLoss Marken officiated. Interment in Glendale cemetery. His first wife and a son Jesse and a daughter predeceased him. married in Chariton to Clara Fox, who survives with several grown children.
J. J. Boutman, a prominent farmer southeast of Montezuma, led the corn crop in the area with 20,500 bushels from 365 acres. The harvest averaged 57 bushels per acre, one field hitting 92. His operation spans 680 acres across owned and rented lands, with horses and one tractor guiding the work.
Keith Utterback, 15, son of Mr and Mrs Wilford Utterback, was accidentally shot in the back with a 22 caliber pistol while hunting near the Will Wharton home, one mile east of Delta. His brother Ward and Lloyd Rose accompanied him. the gun fired as Lloyd tried to climb a fence, striking Keith mid back and lodging near the rib. Ward summoned help.
Keith sustained a bullet wound but traveled with help to a road where Tony De Winter of Sigourney drove him to his home. He was taken to Sigourney hospital, the bullet removed, and he returned home by Tuesday afternoon. Doctors report a smooth recovery with no unexpected complications.
