Boy Bishop Traditions In England And Europe
The boy bishop custom on St Nicholas day decreed robes and insignia for a choir boy who led services and collected money as a right. Salisbury cathedral hosted the grand display, with a retinue and even power to fill prebends. The practice faced censure and was forbidden by Henry VIII before brief restorations, and is echoed in festive notes about early holiday customs and gifts.
