Marsh Grant, playing Santa in a neighborhood Christmas event arranged by his sister, had his face burned when his costume makeup ignited from the stage lights. He quickly pulled off burning clothes and the fire was extinguished without serious injury.
Miss Gertrude Den Hartog, Battle Ridge teacher, led a Christmas program last Tuesday evening featuring a beautifully decorated Christmas tree hung with presents. Parents and friends attended in large numbers, showing appreciation for the pupils and the teacher's work.
Mrs N E Tice and her daughter Lottie hosted a joyful Christmas gathering yesterday with a large circle of relatives. Attendees included Mr and Mrs T D Tice of Pella, several Tice relatives from Taintor Center and Sully, and guests Mrs Cora McAdoo of Indianola, Ruth Daniel D Tice, Beulah McAdoo, Thelma and Vernon Lester Tice, and others from Newton, Sully, and surrounding areas.

Saturday program listings show a two reel drama with M. J. Macquarie and a good single reel. A four reel feature is advertised as coming soon. Venue is Electric Palace with a separate Criminal Palace listing for Saturday January 8 1914.
The marriage of Jacob A. VanDyk and Miss Barbara DeReus is set for today in Pella. Both are well known locally and friends extend congratulations.
Mrs Katharine Veenstra formerly of Pella now of Des Moines married contractor Clifford Fry at the home of Rev C C Colby in Indianola on Wednesday December 17. The couple will reside in Des Moines.
Ben Harrison Read editor of the Ames Times wed Miss Marguerite Leone Graves on Christmas Eve at the Graves home on Grand Avenue with Rev. W J Minchin officiating. Read, the junior Times member, and Graves, oldest daughter of E H Graves, will live at Bateman cottage 312 Tenth Street after February first.
The Pella Commercial Association banquet in the Baptist church hall featured twenty five young women as waitresses and an orchestra, with Mayor H F Johnson introducing W H Fowler, who urged harmony among business leaders. Ralph Bolton spoke on state prosperity and a Des Moines river dam plan, while Y T Van Niewaal addressed creating new industries.
Van Niewaal opened with praise for city welfare and urged broad consideration of growth. J. W. Boyd of the Overall factory urged solving housing for factory workers. Joe Faassen of the Pella Commercial Association spoke on publicity and product backing. W. H. Vander Ploeg proposed quicker debt collection reforms. Rev. J. W. Bailey defended stronger school support and a new high school building. J. G. VanderPol urged expanding the Commercial Association’s reach. Editor A. R. Miller delivered a humorous yet constructive address praising local papers and city aims. H. P. Van Gorp led the banquet committee to success as the town aspires to be the best on the best road in the state.
A letter from H. R. Lemen thanks the Christian Home Circle led by Mrs. Nellie DeHaan for 1913 donations to the Home in Pella. It details cash gifts totaling 14 dollars with 108 dollars for Thanksgiving and 10 dollars for Christmas, plus seven barrels of fruit and four sacks of clothing worth 4.02 in freight. The shipment included 357 quarts of fruit and fifteen pounds of dried apples. Lemen expresses gratitude, notes debts at the institution, and invites continued support and visits in 1914 to aid homeless children.
Des Moines resident J S Gladstone spent Christmas in Pella visiting friends and enjoying the holiday season in the town.
The notice lists several local deaths including Mrs C Gezel of Pella on January 1 1914 at 1 30 am aged 71 years 7 months 18 days. It notes survivors husband son George and daughter Mrs Harrison Van Zee plus siblings and burial at Oakwood cemetery. Also Hospice: Charles W Hamilton died December 29 1913 in Waterloo Nebraska with three children and Oakwood burial in Pella. Another brief: H D Aikins of Winterset died December 29 1913 with Civil War service and business ties to Pella. John Boat died December 31 near town on his 71st birthday paralyzed. funeral at Bethel church and First Reformed Church with Oakwood burial.
Ames resident Ben Walker of the Iowa State College extension department will lecture at the Knoxville Short Course meeting next Saturday at 2 p.m. He travels free of charge to promote the Knoxville program starting January 19, with additional events listed for the week. The note highlights Walker’s Marion County roots and prior editorship of the Iowa Agriculturist, and invites farmers to attend, with various evening entertainments and a premium list offering $700 in class work premiums.

A Christmas gathering at Robert McIntire’s home drew four generations. Grandparents John and Mrs. McIntire of Holmdyville, West and Mrs. McIntire of Moravia, brother-in-law and sister Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hites of New Sharon attended. McIntire children, led by the eldest approaching young womanhood, symbolized the fourth generation present.
The bakery thanks customers for a record year and extends best wishes for the new year. They express appreciation for patronage and hope to merit continued business in the coming year.

John M. Emery died at his Des Moines home on December 27. A famed imitator of Swedish and Swede dialects, he had lived in Newton until about a year ago and was well known in Pella. The 64 year old man made many friends and was widely recognized for his language skills.
