Maribelle Van Tuyl of 1319 Northwest Dr. is appointed Marion County Advisor for Iowa Children's and Family Services. She succeeds Joan Farrer, who led since 1962, and will oversee agency needs outreach and the annual Pella fund drive. The statewide, non governmental agency, once the Iowa Children's Home Society, aids adoptive, foster, and troubled families with counseling and related programs. The Van Tuyls have three grown children.
A first hand reminiscence recalls the Wisse Laundry at the east edge of Lincoln School grounds also called the Pella Steam Laundry. John Wisse founded and ran it about 15 years. Mrs. A. H. Van Haaften recounts lunch breaks with her mother in 1909, the daily work at the shop, and steam jet used to boil eggs during noon hours.
United Cerebral Palsy will launch its 14th Annual Fund Raising Campaign in Marion County from December 27 to January 23 with 200 volunteers. The effort supports services for over 300 Central Iowa residents and funds national research aims. Local programs include counseling, recreation, transport, day camp, advocacy, and housing initiatives for adults with cerebral palsy.
Jerry Fitzgerald Fort Dodge 36 longtime Iowa House member now candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor in 1978. He has served since 1972 with re-elections in 1974 and 1976 and was named majority leader in 1974. He holds a master’s from Missouri and pledges prudent progress for enlightened growth and development in Iowa.
The Wisse laundry ran shirts with detachable collars, collars starched hard, and ironing required care. Workers shared chatter as Mrs. Wisse sometimes assisted during rushes. Pay day was Saturday and a dray wagon delivered laundry around town. By 1920 the laundry ended but John started a soda pop sideline and advertised local entertainments in 1916 17 before ceasing those activities.
An individual who sold a building accepted a job as an employee of Mr Van Gorp and continued in that role. The record notes the transition from ownership to employment under the Van Gorp person.
A laundry service evolved into a dedicated dry cleaning and pressing establishment, expanding offerings beyond wash and fold. The business transitioned to provide professional garment care, marking a shift in local textile service.
