A large crowd from Leighton and nearby communities attended the funeral of Dick C. Van Houweling of Pella on Saturday. The note of many local visits and calls follows, including family gatherings, social visits, church group meetings, and several residents taking short trips to Des Moines and Oskaloosa. A sequence of illnesses and a broken leg among residents are also recorded amid community life and cattle shipments from Leighton.
Harvey Dick Neiswanger worked at a cafe in Ottumwa and was home Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Redding of Marysville visited Thursday with Emma Redding. E S Watts is on the sick list this week. Mr. and Mrs. Cliff McCombs were in Tracy Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Miller and baby visited from Runnells at the Case Vander Veer home. A shower at Mrs. Roy Lashe’s honored Juanita Morgan Sutherland with many gifts from Mses. Nellie Webb to Lucine Lashe. Alf Thompson of Oskaloosa was in town Saturday. Maxine Dennis is quite sick. Toll and spouse were in Oskaloosa Saturday night. The M E church bazaar, moved from last Saturday, will be held next Saturday the 15th.
Heavy snow and cold grip Amsterdam area forcing N Porterville and S Porterville schools to close last week. Families J Schakel and Johnnie Toom relocate to Pella, while Mr and Mrs John Kamerick move to the farm vacated by Toom. The community notes a church program at East Amsterdam school and sympathy for a bereaved family amid scarce livestock feed and coal hauling.
Cordova reports Thanksgiving visits at Otley and nearby homes. Harold Leroy Hiemstra, born December 1, to Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hiemstra, is welcomed with family pride. Arthur De Raad and Artie Zegers visit relatives, while Ada Zegers and Margaret Vande Kieft work with Newton and Pella families.
Mr Aric Dickema of Otley visited Friday afternoon at the John Bloodsworth home. Mr and Mrs Bill Vanden Deey er and sons near Oskaloosa called on Leonard Hiemstra Sunday. John Van Den Berg and Mrs Pete Van Den Berg were Pella callers Saturday. Hendrika and Mary Zegers visited Sunday with Celi agnes and Sophie Verwers.
Sally The Ladies Aid met Friday afternoon in the church basement with a chicken dinner served at noon. The Gleaners class plans a bazaar and program in the church Friday afternoon and evening. Rev. R De Jong preached at the Community church Sunday. Rev. Butler at Montezuma. Union services were held at the Reformed church Sunday evening led by Rev. Butler. A social time followed at Mrs. Isaac Howard's home with eleven members and three visitors. Adelaide Rozendaal is ill with intestinal flu. Leland Eldridge hosted a gathering with bridge and lunch. attendees included Dr. R D Stone and several locals. Oska loosa visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Halblom and daughter Lillian. The Taxis society met at the church parlors. seventeen members and Rev. and Mrs. Butler attended. Mr. and Mrs. Carrol Macy visited Oskaloosa. Albert Rozendaal and Cora Van Gilst were married at the bride’s parents’ home with Rev. R. De Jong officiating. Lane Huyser, an elder in the community, died suddenly from a heart attack. funeral set for Thursday at the Christian Reformed church with Rev. Griffioen. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Rozendaal visited Newton.
Dorothy Romans visits her uncle and aunt in Galesburg while J. Steenbock and others are listed among local guests. The column notes pheasant dinners at the Talbots with Clyde Romans and Dorothy Romans, evening visits by Clifford Romans and Albert Stineman, and multiple Sunday gatherings in the area. March, chosen by Schenck and Zanuck, co-stars with Constance Bennett after a long study of the 16th century goldsmith. He sums Cellini as vain, arrogant, flamboyant yet heroic, a role inviting bold acting.
Mrs Ramer and daughter Jew ell of Newton visited last week at the home of Mr and Mrs William Schippers. Families gathered for a birthday at Will Kling's Tuesday November 20 included Mrs Margaret Schnug Florence Aswalt and several Kling relatives. Mr and Mrs Curtis Dearinger and Mrs E Poortinga traveled to Laurel while care for a sister continued. Various Terpstra families hosted and visited at A L Terpstra home and Stillson Iowa connections were noted.
Local families including Hulls, Fleming, Ryan, Heitsman, Linsteds, and many others shared Thanksgiving meals with relatives in Forest Home, New Sharon, Lynnville, Ames, and surrounding farms. Visitors and guests from Newton, Des Moines, and Canon City joined celebrations, with travel avoiding a late snowstorm.

Paul Towns 33 of Delta died after a heart attack while shoveling coal at the A L Without mine three miles east of Rose Hill Iowa at 4 30 pm Monday He was carried to a scale house and died before Dr W N Wright could reach him Towns had a history of heart illness and the body was taken to his Delta home This report notes he was the youngest son of the family.
Obituary fragment notes late Mr and Mrs L M Towns of Oskaloosa with widow and two children Raymond and Dorothy. Survived by two sisters Mrs H C Moore and Miss Blanche Towns and two brothers Tru man and Homer.
Miss Agnes Samuelson announces a Citizens Conference on Education to be held in Des Moines at the Savery Hotel on December 19. Delegates from state wide groups such as the Iowa Bankers Association and the Iowa Federation of Labor will attend to discuss public school problems and plan a forward looking education program.
Thomas Lancey of Ottumwa was fined 50 dollars and court costs in Earl Morgan's justice court for drinking beer on a public highway. The judge suspended 32.50 of the fine for good behavior. Lancey was arrested on the Bloomfield Ottumwa road Monday night by Sheriff Ross Graham and Deputy Elmer Snedigar.
Central college coach Len Winter was the main guest speaker at the Knoxville high school annual football banquet held Monday evening. He praised football for building character and strength and urged every student to consider attending college.
