Sharp Drop in Purchases of Feeder Cattle
Town farmers cut cattle feeding this fall and winter, down from both last year and 1949. Thornburg says stocker and feeder shipments into the state through September were 203,174 head below 1940 levels. Receipts in remaining months unlikely to offset the three month decline. Iowa feeders have feed but markets for corn fattened steers disappoint. hogs appear a better bet. Corn Belt states show slow replacement cattle demand with seven major states down about 207,420 head through September.
