Steen's Place Among Dutch Figure Painters
Steen, aside from Rembrandt, ranks highest among Dutch figure painters. Born at Leiden, he studied there and painted humorous mythological scenes and bustling interiors. His work blends sympathy and humor with satire, depicting tavern life, Prodigal Son and Father scenes, apothecaries, doctors, and religious subjects, including The Eve of St Nicholas, a Christmas piece showing contrast between a well mannered child and a poor boy, illustrating Steen's comic spirit and masterful draftsman ship.
