Old Settlers Memorial Day Diary and Activities
A long reminiscence of Monroe's Old Settlers Memorial Day detailing judges and attendees at the event. It notes Mrs. Worth the 95 year old, Mrs. Thornton traveling from Los Angeles, Fred Shaw from Miami, and Jim Van Akerntrot from Los Angeles. It lists many local names, mentions a program with Vaught twins, Milk Maids, two male singers, Nora Van Essen’s accordion solos, and a brass group. Children’s contests, races, feathered melon eating, and rides on rides are described, with a scene of rain in the morning and a social gathering at Karl’s residence lunching with Vivian and others. It ends with reflections on childhood joy and nostalgia.
