Farm Bureau meeting set for Summit Lake Prairie Swan Perry Red Rock townships

Summit Lake Prairie Swan Perry and Red Rock townships plan an area Farm Bureau meeting September 13 at 8 pm in Otley school basement. Host families assisting families directors and resolution committee members will discuss all issues and assign discussion leaders for upcoming meetings. Also noted are visits by local residents to family homes, Republican events near Pella, and state political schedules including Norman Erbe in Knoxville.

Army Engineers List Bids To Repair D M River Levees

Rock Island District opened bids Monday for leasing equipment to repair two flood damaged levees on the Des Moines River in the Harvey and Tracy areas between Knoxville and Oskaloosa. Bids ranged from 9,707 to 38,100 with C D Converse of Oskaloosa the apparent low for Tracy Island levee, and Walter A Duval with Darwin D Campbell of Burlington the apparent low for Harvey Island levee. Successful bidders have five days to begin work. no firm completion date set. These projects are part of a series to repair levees damaged in the 1960 spring flood, using emergency funds to restore levees to pre-flood condition.

Walraven Heads Farm Bureau 1961 Membership Drive

Harold Walraven of Lake Prairie Two is chosen to head the 1961 Farm Bureau membership drive. This marks the second straight year a Lake Prairie man leads the drive. last year Vernon Menninga guided Marion county to a high percent of goal. The Walraven family operates 140 acres with hogs, cattle and dairy, has three married daughters, and is active in church and local committees.

Marion ASC elects leaders at county convention in Knoxville

M L Robuck was reelected chair of the Marion county ASC committee at the Knoxville convention held Saturday August 27. Russell E Crozier was reelected vice chairman and J Ray Brooks named third member. First and second alternates named were George E Rooda and Walter L Hayes, both of Pleasant Grove township. Terms begin Monday August 29 for one year.

Jasper SCS booth at the Iowa State Fair earned first prize and a blue ribbon in a field of four displays. Three other districts represented were Kosuth Warren and Mitchell counties, with their placements listed.

M&M Peppy Pals Hold Lake Keomah Meeting

The M and M Peppy Pals met at Lake Keomah on August 12. One group arrived around 3 30 and swam, the other around 5 30. They hiked, cooked supper, held a brief meeting, played games, and had watermelon. They sang, slept, woke to breakfast, cleaned the lodge, and hiked before returning home.

Swank Family Reunion Held at Newton Pool Park

Newton News reports the Swank family reunion took place Thursday evening at the Swimming Pool Park in Pella with attendees from Newton including Leland and Mrs Smith, Dick Van Hall, Peter Swank Jr and family, Lewis Hartgers and family, Tom Wearmouth and family, Willard Norvell and Billie, and Peter Swank Sr. Rev A Haverkamp of Pella led services Sunday at Chr Ref church. Several local visits and gatherings are also noted including the Samson families visiting Prairie City and Lacona, and a Bible conference trip to Lake Okoboji by Leighton attendees.
