Iron boundary posts mark Missouri Iowa line history
The Cincinnati Iowa Review notes a historic iron post boundary two miles east and three miles south of Cincinnati that settled a long running border dispute. Posts stand about three and a half feet deep, weigh hundreds of pounds, and bear IOWA or MISSOURI on opposite faces. A 1839 dispute nearly sparked civil war, with militia from both sides, ending in 1860 when a surveyed chain of posts established the line from Des Moines to the Missouri River.
