Budget Director E L Hogue weighs a broad push by state officials for larger salaries as department heads submit biennial requests for 1929. Governor Hammill seeks raise from 6200 to 8000, along with 3000 for private secretary and 1200 for housing, with no state executive mansion.
Officials led by Secretary of State Walter Ramsay press for raises of 1000 dollars per year for most officials. State railway commissioners seek 4000 dollar increases, plus raises for assistants. Librarian Johnson Brigham asks 3600, labor bureau wants an inspector at 1800, blind commission seeks 50000 biennial, etomologist 10000, mine inspector 900, history society 89999, industrial commission 800 more. Many minor staff increases proposed. auditor did not request more. Budget director may cut or send to legislature.
Williamsburg Iowa farmers will own and operate a fire truck after a meeting with townspeople. The vehicle will serve a fifteen mile diameter area and be manned by two Williamsburg firemen with storage space provided by the town. This marks the first farmer owned fire truck in Iowa.
Two young couples in a Wayne county car were followed by a Ford. The Ford driver criticized their driving and revealed a badge of authority. He escorted them to the sheriff then to Justice Seward where a reckless driving trial was held at eleven. The electric lights failed and flashlights aided the proceedings. the driver was fined.
W J High, an Illinois state official, imposed a ten dollar fine for the offense. The report notes the authority and the amount as part of a routine enforcement action.
Iowa State Fair and National Livestock Show announced by Secretary A R Corey with a calendar of special days. Aug 27 to Sept 3 include Children Public School World War Veterans Des Moines Baby Beef Music Religious Oratorio Boone Farm Bureau Automobile and Implement Dealers Old Soldiers Oskaloosa State Owen Boys and Girls Club Live Stock Parade Automobile Race Grand Finale. Farm Bureau Farmers Union Corn Growers Association and others will hold conventions on their days with noted speakers. Boone Newton and Oskaloosa will present civic pageants and features highlighting local advantages.
