A Saturday visit to EF C Nibbelink at the corner of Fast 3rd and Oskaloosa reveals a craftsman who channels walnut wood into finely finished items. Six upholstered chairs and numerous parlor and dining pieces display careful hand polishing and a special wood treatment, with pieces carved by pocket knife predating his tools.
Thomas McCamber suffered severe facial and leg burns when a gasoline stove exploded at 5 45 am in his home. The fire damaged the interior, estimated at 2500 dollars, with flames scorching walls and ceilings. McCamber was alone. wife and daughter were away. The house owned by Frank Ankeney had little insurance, and firemen quickly controlled the blaze. The report also notes the Federal Radio Commission facing a flood of fan mail to destroy, likely including pan mail.
Will Rogers latest picture Han dy Andy arrives at Rivola theatre Oskaloosa Saturday August 18 for a three day run. Previewers hail it as the funniest of his career with Will swapping work in a drug store for pigeons golf Mardi Gras and a Tarzan costume leading to a riotous finale with Conchita Montenegro and a surprise ending.
Des Moines reports the eightieth Iowa state fair will run August 22 to 31 with an agricultural expo a corn show Farm Bureau and state department exhibits, the largest livestock show to date, extensive 4 H contests, a women’s exhibit hall, a national farm machinery show, public school displays from sixty counties, and diverse entertainment including auto and horse races rodeo bands fireworks and a modern midway. A Chicago to Cleveland trip anecdote is noted.
Exposition officials unveiled eight days of gratis days and headline events for the 80th Iowa State Fair opening next Wednesday. Highlights include Free Children’s Day Aug. 24, 4-H stock judging day and auto race day, World War veterans honored with free admission Aug. 25, Garden Club Day Aug. 26, Farm Bureau Day Aug. 27 with Rexford Tugwell, Old Soldier’s Day Aug. 28, 4-H free admissions Aug. 29, Million Dollar Livestock Parade Aug. 30, and Auto Race Day plus Baby Beef and Pig Sale Day Aug. 31. Des Moines Days Aug. 29-30.
Carl McFarland of What Cheer is jailed after allegedly shooting Laura Jones, a middle aged resident, wounding her in the side and lung near the Lash home as she walked toward town. McFarland was captured after returning to his sister Nina Thompson’s house and is awaiting word on Jones’s condition amid unclear motive and prior quarrel.
Jerry Richard of Percy Indiana, son of Mr and Mrs E A Cochran, will enter the Iowa State Fair baby health contest in Des Moines. About five hundred infants are expected. contestants aged 12 to 36 months compete in rural, town, city, and twin classes with prizes totaling 400 dollars. Judging runs August 24 to 30 during the state women expos. Entries close next week. blanks available from the State Fair Secretary.
A Saturday ruling by LeRoy T. Rader assistant attorney general clarified his opinion that beer containing four per cent alcohol by weight is not intoxicating liquor under Iowa law.
Law officials and residents questioned how cases involving intoxicated persons should be handled. Wenig asked for the opinion on railroad employees selling beer and seniority, noting the new beer law removed beer from statutory intox icants. The opinion states no bearing on defenses under current statutes.
A court ruling stated that a defendant’s intoxication does not depend on drink strength. Judge Rader asserted that intoxication is determined by the state of being drunk, regardless of whether the beverage was beer, buttermilk, or whisky. Chronicle Want Ads note added.
Bus service departs Pella for Des Moines at 9 30 a m 8 30 p m and 7 48 p m. Transfers to Oskaloosa leave at 9 25 a m 3 25 p m and 7 36 p m. All buses depart Central Park Gate.
