Iowa State agronomist Ralph Krenzin promotes using oats as forage rather than grain to boost profits when grain yields look doubtful. Early removal aids legume and grass stands, with grazing providing 4 to 5 weeks and two to three cattle per acre. Avoid grazing until 8 to 10 inches high, but prevent field damage by firming the seedbed.
