The Northwest Territories experimental farm at Indian Head, forty five miles east of Regina, under Supt. Angus McKay, explored southern Assiniboia's farming potential. Early trials faced setbacks with some almost-tragic failures, but average yields rose to about thirty bushels per acre, highlighting potential in the western belt.

Indian Head wheat experiments show strong yields and soil value

The Indian Head region yields about thirty bushels of wheat on plowed ground with higher results on cultivated stubble and on the experimental farm. Superintendent McKay, lauded for nearly two decades, has advanced hardy early wheat varieties and broadened impact across Assiniboia Alberta and Saskatchewan. The 680 acre farm started in 1887 features 225 tree varieties and fruitful alfalfa work, with notable fruit and vegetable trials and limited fertilizer use. Prices for prime wheat land rise as crops prosper and farmers arrive with modest means to build successful operations.
