Des Moines Register reports two year findings from Mount Pleasant inebriate ward. Of 282 admitted, 115 had intemperate fathers, 11 had intemperate both parents, 53 with unknown parental intemperance, and 28 with tubercular parents. Many began drinking before adulthood, with 39 under 15 and 103 between 15 and 19. Two began after 60. Average start ages were 21 for men and 34 for women. Most were native born, Iowa contributing 134. 238 native, 42 foreign born. Beer and whiskey common culprits, whiskey the leading drink with 142 victims. Education varied. only 8 had no education, 32 men college bred, 20 men and 2 women high school graduates. Only 94 professed religion.
