The Pella tennis team edged Elmhurst 4 to 3 on Elmhurst courts as several matches were halted by darkness. Singles results favored Elmhurst 3-2 with two unfinished encounters. Pella secured the doubles point.
Frank and Price Fish of Elmhurst defeated Burt Baron and Bob Baron of Pella in a three set match 5-7 6-2 6-4. John Sunstrum and Harry Ragen of Elmhurst fell to Burt and Bob Baron 6-2 2-6 2-1 in a separate pairing.
Eddyville town council proposes a 1935 budget total of 4572, down from 5320 in 1934, with the largest cut in the general fund. About 1200 of the reduction would be raised by taxes as assessed valuation fell from 328,436 in 1823 to 294,314 in 1934, per the Eddyville Tribune.
Guthrie Center mayor Ambrose Diebold ordered intoxicated defendants to ten days of street sweeping to keep the town clean at no cost to the city. The policy has reduced but not eliminated the number of drunk cases, yet streets remain less spoiled.
A prairie fire burned 160 acres of dry meadow and pasture on four farms near West Grove Iowa eight miles west of Bloomfield before farmers stopped it. The wind threatened to carry the blaze toward Mark Indiana. Hay stacks burned and several farms including Lloyd Foster Elvin McCullough Irene Peden and John Hopkins were damaged.
Funeral services were held at Monroe Methodist church for Samuel Nearmyer who died July 16 after a protracted illness. Born Sept 2, 1876 near Pella, he married Minnie Sytsma in 1901 and leaves wife, daughter Letta Brown, three grandsons, seven sisters and two brothers. A devoted Christian, he joined Pleasant Hill M E in 1912 and burial was in Griffis cemetery.
Mayor Leon Miller asked Knoxville residents to cut nonessential water use as city water demand surged by 150000 gallons daily. He cited the Des Moines river as the source, currently at record low levels. City council also approved connecting two city wells with four inch pipe.
City officials plan a new program to maintain higher water levels and stop conservation needs. Work starts immediately. Farm shortages drive demand with about 30,000 gallons daily hauled eight miles from Knoxville. Two river pumps serve the city. the 465 gallon per minute pump runs full time, and the 415 gallon per minute unit operated 18 hours daily. Since last Thursday the larger pump has run 24 hours, increasing monthly output by 4,500,000 gallons at current rates. One well is 24 inches in diameter and 34 feet deep. The second well detail follows.
The text describes wells 26 inches by 36 feet fed through a sand bar in a river. When the river level drops the water in the wells lowers and the current milky appearance is caused by air pulled through the pump intake. Price says a few more feet of water would halt this.
Reverend William J. Hilmert of Kalamazoo has accepted a call as pastor of the Garfield Park Reformed Church in Grand Rapids Michigan. He is well known in Pella, a Hope College graduate of 1925 and former Academy professor in Orange City. His charge includes 385 members from 130 families.
He supplied the Second Reform ed church very acceptably during the interim it was pastorless.
Cornelius Vanden Baard born near Pella July 1 1849 died July 24 1934 at his daughter’s home Des Moines aged 85 years 24 days. Survived by wife Maggie Van Bentum eight children 25 grandchildren and two sisters. lifelong Christian faithful, often led funeral services.
