Bowen's Prairie: Deserted Iowa Village Through Time

The Bowen's Prairie story recounts a once thriving Jones County settlement near a military road between Cascade and Monticello. Founded by Hugh Bowen and John Flin in 1836, it peaked with a 1840 census of 290 men and 185 women, then faded after the Civil War as residents moved to nearby towns. The post office closed on November 20, 1902, ending rural services and sealing the village’s disappearance. locals believe railroad arrival might have transformed it into a major town.
