Big Rush of Hogs To Market Is On

Agricultural economists at Iowa State College report a bulk of the 1939 hog crop moving to market at prices well below 1939. The unfavorable hog corn ratio prompts earlier selling of fall pigs while some farmers keep pigs on pasture and fatten them in summer. Seasonal rise in marketings expected to outpace last year with prices likely to stay low unless demand improves. The winter ration reduced sow numbers planned for farrow, but marketed sows since January exceed last year, possibly shrinking the spring pig crop.
