Parents Can Help To Rid Children of Racial Prejudice
Dr. Bernard Kutner found in sixty Boston children that by age seven eighteen showed strong racial prejudice with insecure self views tied to devaluing others. Dr. Paul H. Mussen noted some children shed prejudice when exposed to tolerant views, linked to stronger family security. Mothers of prejudiced children were stricter and anxious about small daily details, while more information about races reduced bias. The Child Study Association offers a pamphlet listing 230 children's books on race, titled Books of the Year for Children, for 20 cents.
