Choose Plants to Fit Your House and Grounds
Iowa State College landscape architect Margherita Tarr advises selecting plants by site needs rather than appearance, planning locations in advance and matching size and form to surroundings. For small 1 to 1 1/2 story homes use low growers, with tallest plants under six feet at full growth, placed at house corners along diagonal center lines. porch or windows reduce need for shrubbery at that corner. For further guidance, refer to Pamphlet 5 Iowa Landscape Plant by Iowa State College, listing plants by age and height, growing conditions, shape, texture and bloom color, and consult your county extension director.
