New Iowa Fuel Tax Law Goes Into Effect

State Treasurer Leo Wegman announced the enforcement of Iowa's new motor fuel tax law effective Sunday. The measure taxes all fuels used to propel motor vehicles and ends fuel refunds except for diesel, tractors, airplanes, stationary engines, and motor boats. Licenses are required for distributors and transport trucks, fuel oil dealers, and service stations, with fees specified and bonds posted. About 8,000 service stations and 1,000 distributors had applied for licenses, plus 500 fuel oil dealers. The law aims to increase revenue and curb refund graft following a probe by the joint legislative committee. Publication was delayed to give dealers time to prepare. The court's interpretation of prior law had blocked taxes on blended fuels and non gasoline forms.
