Five local 4-H clubs gear up for the Fall Fair and Festival set for October 7 to 9 at the rodeo grounds. National 4-H Week runs October 3 to 9 with about 78,000 Texas youth involved.
The Women’s Division of the Pecos Chamber of Commerce plans a new youth center for Pecos teens. Led by Mrs. Jerra Pearce, the group aims to turn the idea into a working project this year. They seek volunteers and suggestions, with plans for a recreation room reading area and teen friendly interior.
The Pecos City Council passed an ordinance to annex 75 plus acres along SH 20 at Collie exchange into city limits. Union Oil Co of California plans a Union 76 marketing complex with trucking and auto facilities, a restaurant, and limited motel rooms, hiring 55 to 60 locals, with water sewer taps funded by Union.
Texas Employment Commission releases a study forecasting probable trends in Texas industry and occupations to mid decade. TEC Chairman Harold Dudley calls the report a breakthrough in matching workers with jobs and locations. The Field Day at the Texas A&M Research Station scheduled for tomorrow is canceled due to rain. the public is invited to visit the station any time to observe experiments.
Texas Representative Richard C. Slack of Pecos is appointed to the Legislative Budget Board by Speaker Gus Mutscher. Slack joins Rep. James L. Slider, Rep. W.S. Heatly, and Rep. Ben Atwell as the House contingent, with the 10 member board including top Senate finance and state affairs leaders. Slack is a nine term member with prior service on the board and on Appropriations committees.
The first autumn storm hit Pecos and surrounding areas with high winds and rain soon after midnight. Totals included .8 inch at KIM Radio in Pecos and up to 2 inches near Dixie Ranch, with 1.57 inches at Culberson plant before 7:30 a.m. Rain persisted, sparing little damage according to reports from Associated Press.
The Junior Class of Pecos High School will sponsor its first annual pancake supper tomorrow night before the Lamesa game. Servings run 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Tickets cost 1 and can be bought at the door. Proceeds aid the junior senior banquet and the scholarship fund.
The annual Sidewalk Sale by Pecos merchants is planned for tomorrow. Dennis Baustert chairs the event under the Merchants Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, with adverts in today's Enterprise detailing the bargains.
Austin reports three top state officials and aides indicted by the Travis County grand jury in a stock fraud scandal. House Speaker Gus Mutscher is charged with bribery and conspiracy to bribe, with Rep. Tommy Shannon and Rush McGinty named for conspiracy to bribe. Dist Atty Bob Smith noted jurors’ pending absences. another indictment for false swearing was vetoed against former insurance commissioner John Osorio.
The Reeves County Sheriff’s Office sponsors a teenage dance Saturday night at the Sheriff’s Posse Barn from 8 to midnight. Music by Danny Kirby and his Western Drifters. Admission is 1 per person, limited to teenagers only.
