A Wednesday night rally in Pecos showcased local pride and determination. Residents stood united, praising the town’s grit and go‑getter attitude, noting Pecos as a place with strong character and community spirit.
Rafaela Martinez, beloved figure in Pecos Mexican settlement, died of a heart attack Monday. Friends recall her as a mother to all, tending the sick and comforting the grieving, tolling the Catholic church bell each morning, and devoted to her community until her death. The town gathered Tuesday, honoring a saintly life of quiet service.
In Reeves County a decisive margin backed repeal of the 18th Amendment and related measures on beer and local option. The county also favored a $20 million relief bonds amendment, homestead tax exemption up to 3000, and Home Rule Charter adoption for large counties. Bert Howell narrowly led Rankin for the 95th district seat as Stubeman carried other counties. turnout was brisk and voters stayed in line all day. A commissioners court canvass was scheduled to certify results.

Lively town meeting features L Griffin of the West Texas Land Owners and Oil Producers Association arguing East Texas violation of proration laws harms West Texas. J J Wheat of Loving County serves as a director. the group collects no dues.

Over 3100 miles in eleven days is the travel record of Mr. and Mrs. John Wadley and Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Polk who returned from a trip to California Grand Canyon and Catalina Island. They drove Pecos to Los Angeles and other Southern California sights enjoyed glass bottom boat views and coral seas. On return they visited the Grand Canyon and were tired but happy to be home in Diego.
The Camp family delegation completed a 4000 mile round trip Sunday night in Dr. Jims new Dodge sedan. Included were Mr and Mrs Keith Camp Mr and Mrs Hilliard Camp and Miss Nancy Camp. They traveled via Oklahoma to Chicago and returned through Kentucky Louisiana and the old south reaching Galveston for salt water bathing. Mrs Hilliard Camp visited relatives in Victoria Texas. The trip was reported as excellent with the Fair described as a marvelous attraction worth attending.
Division highway offices moved from Balmorhea to Pecos and set up in the southwest corner of the Brandon Hotel. The move, done quietly this week, transfers desks and files while a new $10,000 division office building is funded. The relocation will be temporary until the building is completed, and six to eight new families are expected to move to Pecos due to the move.
Pecos Rotary club meets at noon to plan Labor Day picnic on Scenic Drive in Jeff Davis county with Alpine and Marfa clubs. They will leave at noon and gather at 4 pm in a shaded oak grove between Prude and Up and Down ranches about 10 miles from Far Davis. Attendance pledged at 109 percent with a basket lunch and an interclub attendance contest led by four group captains. A St James Baptist quartet performed during the meeting.
A baseball game between the P. T. A. Toyah ladies and the Wickett ladies team is scheduled in Toyah for Friday September 1. First pitch at 5 p m. Admission 10 and 25 cents with planned fun and community gathering.
J E Couch is home after spending the past summer studying at Texas Tech.
Lieut. T. A. Wood of San Antonio piloted a large Martin bombing plane to Pecos for a family visit with aunt Mrs. W. T. Wicker and Sgt. L. N. Nugent. The monoplane with twin motors, central pilot compartment, and rear gunner section was shown at the municipal airport after a 55 minute flight from Marfa.
A dozen Pecos women under Mrs J E Starkley organize a canvass of local consumers to recruit 100 percent household and homeowner cooperation with the NRA. Signed cards pledge patronage to Blue Eagle displaying institutions. Rev John Byrd oversees manpower drive and downtown compliance checks follow.
New officers of the American Legion Richard Briscoe Post No. 91 will be installed next Tuesday at the regular meeting place. Dr. J. L. Kincannon will be installed as Post Commander, succeeding Earl Bell. Members urged to attend and give the new administration a strong send-off.
Pecos city schools open for a nine month term on September 5 due to a new state law ending the Teachers Institute. Six new teachers join the staff including Miss Lorene Moursumb in the high school and Miss Lilly Lay and Miss Callie Ross in the grammar grades. Returning veterans include Principal KR Blaeckweil and staff members Miss Chism Miss Magee Mrs Moorhead and others. Three new teachers will be found in the three grade level sections.
Miss Lillian Osborn, Pecos High valedictorian 1926 and sister of Mrs. J. R. Humphrey, earned a law degree at the University of Texas after taking an A B at the College of Industrial Arts. She taught briefly, studied law in summers, and now joins a prominent Lufkin firm headed by Judge J J Sollins to practice law.
