Pecos Chamber of Commerce votes to hold a dinner honoring Pecos and Wink football teams after the Eagle Wildcat clash on Nov 30. Tickets cost 1 each and cover the buyer and a player. Committee named including May Albert Sisk and Jack Hawkins to arrange details.
An inch of rain fell in Pecos and surrounding West Texas areas, mainly in the north and west sectors, boosting pasture prospects and livestock outlook. The rainfall sparked renewed cattle trading with Pecos Auction ring reporting strong activity and high prices, as Bill Cameron of Seymour bought 1800 yearlings from Babicora Development Co in the week’s largest deal.
The First Cavalry Division under Brig. Gen. Kenyon A. Joyce completed a concentration march to Balmorhea Texas. About 6000 troops will participate in a two week war game with mechanized and horse cavalry units and a contrasting infantry combat team. High Army officials are expected to visit for the October 28 division review.
Géorgie Nagel, local lumber dealer, is elected president of the Pecos Chamber of Commerce for the coming year and Emmett Beauchamp named vice president. New directors include Robert Bell and J. F. Biggs among others. The group discussed Irvin Slings Park plans with CCC and state park support. They voted to join PTA Halloween Carnival and plan a Pecos Wink football dinner fundraiser.
The Pecos Lions Club leaders at two meetings drafted the coming year's main objectives. Plans include continuing Boy Scout support and Cubbing, finishing the Boy Scout hut with log slabs and plumbing, dedicating it during Boy Scout Week in February, aiding the blind and needy with glasses, funding up to five dollars monthly for the school milk fund, and assisting Rotary with the Christmas charity drive. The clubs will share the annual charity effort, with Lions pledging cooperation and jar collections to offset costs.
Farm parity payments totaling 11 966 64 were received this week and issued to farmers. The total 1939 checks received to date rose to 24 132 37. Slightly over 12 000 had already been received with a few checks still to come, according to County Agent Ted Johnston.
Pecos grower M. L. Todd shipped another car of Pecos canteloupes this week tying the season to 53 cars. The 28th car for the year keeps Todd as a leading producer and reflects continued demand for the famed fruit.
Pecos Valley Livestock Protective Association members heard Rep. James H. Goodman outline plans to push extending school land note maturities at the next legislative session. J. S. Price explained 1934 acts already shifted dates, with 1941 earliest and 1944 many maturities, an extension sought to ease rancher debt. About 20 members attended the Finley‑led meeting in Monahans.
Beginning next week readers may forecast football results for a weekly $20 prize. The United sponsors $10, The Enterprize matches it. A coupon in The Enterprise lists 20 games. winner takes the prize, ties split. Pecos entries due by 6 p.m. Friday at The United. out of town entries may be mailed.
Red Bluff reservoir was stocked this week as state hatchery officials at San Angelo released 5 625 black bass into the lake. This follows 6 625 calico bass added last September and 33 750 dream put in the lake.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. A. Gardner on the birth of a son in a Pecos sanitarium October 10.
The Pecos Chamber of Commerce votes to close local shops on November 30 for the Pecos-Wink football game day. President Roosevelt has declared Thanksgiving November 23 nationwide, causing states to choose differing dates.
Pecos resident Mrs Emma Caroline Boles died at a local hospital after a ten day illness. Born August 16, 1867 in Memphis Illinois she married William Blueford Boles in 1890 and had six children. Funeral at First Methodist Church Pecos Friday at 5 pm with interment in Mulkeytown Illinois beside her husband.
ECOS and Kermit meet tonight at 8 15 at Walton Field in the opening District 7 A game. Pecos carries a 1-2 record while Kermit is 2-1. Band and pep squads join a 5 p m parade, with team members leaving at 2 30 and band members later. Coach Hopkins lists probable starters and notes lineup tweaks after 10 days of drills. Kermit faces absences of Thorpe and Roark, both ineligible, leaving Wings and ends short in tonight’s matchup.
The Soil Conservation Service completed work on Nell Westerman’s Balmorhea farm, constructing borders and planting alfalfa on 12 acres. SCS engineers mapped borders, noted high spots, and provided a topographical guide to crop rotation. Westerman praised the engineers for aiding land preparation and uniform germination after sowing.
Pecos schools mark Fire Prevention Week with programs drills and badges at the high and elementary schools. Mayors Fire chief and council visited the campuses as student assemblies honored volunteer firemen and named chiefs captains and lieutenants for each school.
Mrs. Tom McClure heads a new permanent city parks board named by the City Council. The panel will study park possibilities, needed capital, maintenance, and revenue sources and draft a concrete proposal for public approval. Members include H a y W Hinkle Harold G Meyer Floyd Brownlee and Miss Warren Collings. The board replaces a temporary committee and may consider warrants or bonds with taxpayer support.
William F. White aged 71 died in a Pecos hospital after a paralytic stroke. He owned property in West Texas for over a decade and managed ranch holdings with Edwin Finley before Finley’s death. White, a Fort Worth business leader and president of W F White Land Corporation, is survived by two daughters two sisters and three grandchildren. His body was sent to Fort Worth for funeral services.
Construction on Pecos Rotary Field field house progresses rapidly. Contractor A H Hutts finished the foundation and tiling up to the frame as of Thursday. Roof work planned for the weekend or early next week with occupancy expected in about three weeks.
The Williams Kerr Chevrolet Co will unveil the 1940 Chevrolet tomorrow in Pecos with an 8 a.m. opening. Ralph Williams promises a strikingly larger, more beautiful low-priced car as the Pecos school band tours the downtown at 4 p.m. followed by a 4:30 concert inside the showroom and coffee and cake from 4 to 6 p.m.
