Before-Before-Shopper An Vines scrutinizes a package from Safeway shelves while shoppers seek favorite brands amid limited stock two days before a new Pecos store opens. Lloyd Scott fills shelves at night in the 28 000 square foot store slated to open at 8 a.m. Sunday with larger aisles and broader merchandise.
Temperature dropped to 27 degrees for six hours Thursday night near Pecos. A & M Experimental Station soil scientist Jaroy Moore warned freezes this early could harm cotton and sorghum crops. City lows fell to 33 with 0.05 inch precipitation. no garden plant damage reported as Texas panhandle cold snaps spread.

Four people were jailed in Reeves County after a large crackdown on Mexican heroin traffic. Oscar Juarez of Kemp and Tony Sanchez of Marfa were nabbed on the street, while Pete Montoya and Robert Carillo, already in custody for heroin and conspiracy charges, had arrest warrants served. Other suspects, including Jose Armando Rodriguez of Odessa and Ameliano Aranda and Jesus Briones of Odessa, were arrested in related cases with bonds set at 50,000 each. Montoya and Carillo face additional counts with 25,000 bonds.
Two American climbers, Dr. Chris Chandler and Bob Cormack, neared Everest summit on the final leg of the Bicentennial Everest Expedition. They crossed the Hillary Step at about 2:30 p.m. local time with Sherpa Ang Phurba unable to continue due to oxygen issues, observers reported from Nepal.
The U S Postal Service and other federal offices not involved in emergency or law enforcement work will be closed on Monday for Columbus Day. Texas State offices will also be closed, as will banks and savings and loan institutions. Schools will close though children do not have to attend. teachers still report. City and country offices will remain open.
