Unemployment Dips as Employment Rises in September
The Labor Department reports total unemployment fell to 4.8 million while total employment rose slightly on a seasonally adjusted basis. Most gains are in part time work as weekly earnings drop 27 cents to 128.76 due to shorter hours. The labor force shrank about 1.5 million as students return to school.

Brownie troop wins float prize at Mother Goose parade
In Dallas the Mother Goose parade at the T and P Railroad depot announced winners. Brownie troop 387 took first in the float division while Darlene Millan and Dana Stroud led the bicycle and tricycle division. Debra Hilliard and Melissa Hardy won walking. Second and third place ribbons were awarded to listed participants, with several others noted in fifth place. A separate arson case at the Adolphus Hotel named Zonia Ann Fugett, 21, among two employees reporting the fire. she fainted in the lobby.

Pecos Fall Fair Entering Second Day With Lamb Judging
The Pecos Fall Fair moved into its second day as light rain reduced opening day attendance. Today focuses on weighing and classifying lambs in the junior livestock division with finals slated for Saturday. Horse show judging begins at 2 p.m. for 23 halter classes. livestock entries must be in by 9 a.m. and released at 4 p.m.. junior capon show in place by 9 a.m. Women’s division entries stay until 9 p.m.

Kitchen Fire Damages William Mattox Home on Ross
A fire started by an oven left on overnight caused heavy kitchen and cabinet damage at the William Mattox residence 516 Ross Blvd. No injuries were reported as seven fire units battled the blaze, which was under control by 2:07 a.m. The family, all inside, remained in the home after firefighters left.
