Guadalupe Mountains marks first anniversary as park
The anniversary marks the formal establishment of Guadalupe Mountains National Park and its dedication last year led by Julie Nixon Eisenhower and Nathaniel Reed before about 2,400 visitors. The park, 77,500 acres, remains primitive with a visitor center along highway 62 180 near Pine Springs Texas and offers 55 miles of trails plus primitive campgrounds and six backcountry sites. Access to Dog Canyon and McKittrick Canyon requires crossing private land with limited public-use road access pending authorization and funding.
