Former U S senator Thomas J. Dodd died suddenly at his Old Lyme home early Monday at age 64. His daughter Mrs Marthur Bonanno said he was enjoying a quiet evening and died instantly from a coronary with no prior illness indicated.
Soviet President Nikolai V. Podgorny will make an unofficial visit to Egypt within days to review the post purge situation following Anwar Sadat's crackdown on leftist rivals. Tass said the trip aims to gauge Egypt's direction as a key arms supplier and ally.
In Rosario Argentina authorities say no word from the leftist Revolutionary Army of the People about the abduction of Stanley E M Sylvester 58 honorary British consul. A bar note claimed he would be at the disposition of popular justice and gave his ID card. no ransom mentioned.
Canadian authorities investigate a shipboard fire on the Norwegian cruise Meteor that killed two crew members. Searchers comb the blackened interior for missing crew as 67 passengers aboard the 300 foot vessel escaped without injury and survivors praised the crew for a calm evacuation.
Adm Elmo R Zumwalt Jr says the Navy faces pressure from a growing Soviet fleet and a shrinking defense budget. He argues for fewer but more powerful nuclear carriers and greater use of helicopters and vertical takeoff aircraft to lower costs. A fourth nuclear carrier was cut from this year's budget.
Twenty four banks are being asked if they control any Lockheed Aircraft stock or have ties to the aircraft industry. The inquiries, sent by House Banking Committee Chairman Wright Patman, aim to probe connections as hearings on Nixon administration loan guarantees of 250 million dollars move toward a June start. The chair calls the plan more a bailout for big banks than aid to a single company.
The jury returns to hear a re reading of testimony by a key prosecution witness against Ericka Huggins. Warren Kimbro, who pleaded guilty to second degree murder, testified he fired the first shot and said Huggins warned against using a known car. Huggins denied the statement.
Mrs. Glenda Dennison is among thirty recipients awarded a one month Pan American College scholarship in Edinburg this summer. From July 13 to August 14 she studies teaching methods for Spanish speaking children as English as a second language. Dennison, a Pecos Kindergarten teacher for two years, will remain in Pecos-Barstow Schools next year.
Texas Tech University will offer three graduate level courses this summer through the Permian Basin Graduate Center. Courses include Exceptional Children and Youth from June 15 to August 3, a speed reading course pending Pecos interest, and Readings and Research in American Economic History. Absentee voting closes Tuesday at 5 pm for Pecos Barstow CISD s 1.25 million school bond issue to be decided May 29 at multiple polling sites. No tax increase expected if approved. Bond funds would expand high school facilities and offer new science labs and vocational shops. An oil and gas property tax increase has boosted district tax valuation by about 19 million.
Three bicycles were reported stolen over the weekend with two quickly recovered. A. Goodrich turned over a second bike at 1206 Veterans after it was found in a dead end alley between Missouri and Iowa. A Schwinn Stingray boy’s bike was stolen from Milton’s Corner Conoco. A plate glass window at Terrazas Furniture Warehouse was damaged and a news rack was reported missing from Foster’s Restaurant.
Funeral services were held Saturday in Graham for Paul Johnson a former Peeps resident who died in Fresno California last Friday after a short illness Burial was in Loving New Mexico He is survived by his wife three children two brothers and one sister
