Allegheny Airlines announced new navy blue hot pants for spring and summer as part of flight attendant uniforms. The outfit includes a red-trim tunic, blue hose and boots, with two dress and jacket sets and two pants suits also in the lineup, to debut within ten days.
Xerox Corp disclosed at its annual meeting in Webster that representatives have visited Peking to pursue trade with Communist China. President C Peter McColough announced the development.
Federal Judge Marvin E. Frankel ruled Sobell may speak and march in mass demonstrations under his parole. Sobell, 54, was imprisoned 18 years for spying for the Soviet Union and had been denied permission to speak in Los Angeles and attend two antiwar rallies in Washington. The court found New York's Parole Board acted with naive fear he might resume subversive work.
Trustees managing Penn Central Railroad warn that further emergency actions are needed to stabilize the carrier and avoid failure. They report a $92.5 million loss for the first quarter, up $26 million from 1970’s comparable period but below the record $197 million loss in late 1970.
The 7th U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the partial immunity provision of the 1970 Organized Crime Control Act as unconstitutional. It held that if prosecutors compel testimony, a witness must receive full immunity from prosecution. The Supreme Court earlier agreed to review a related 9th Circuit ruling.
The Agriculture Department limited imports of Mexican tomatoes to run May 24 through June 30 with a minimum size of 2 9 32 inches for all fruit. The rule allows smaller ripe tomatoes than previously proposed and targets competition for Florida growers.
Svetlana Peters daughter of Joseph Stalin gave birth in San Rafael to a healthy seven pound nine ounce girl named Olga. Peters is married to William Wesley Peters chief architect of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Family spokesman said both mother and baby are doing well.
The Everest expedition halted after three months amid dissension and illness. British climbers Don Whillans and Dougal Haston failed to reach the summit due to lack of oxygen, food, and rope. Two Nepalese Sherpas could not reach the lead climbers, with two Japanese climbers supporting the effort and two Americans positioned below.
Two Pecos girls compete for District 2T3 Queen at the Lions Clubs convention in Odessa. Kathy Beauchamp represents the Evening Lions Club and Gloria Arreguy represents Amistad Lions Club. Queen’s reception at 4 pm, contest at 8 pm at Inn of the Golden West.
David Dean of Pecos received a bachelor of arts from Austin College in Sherman. He graduated with honors in economics and sociology, was an Austin Scholar and Alpha Chi member. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Bob Dean of Pecos.
The Pecos High School Eagle Band holds a Sweetheart coronation tonight at 8 PM in the school auditorium. One of twelve nominees will receive the traditional silver baton from 1971 72 Sweetheart Carolyn Gann after the annual spring concert featuring the Eagle Choir Stage Band Concert Band Symphonic Band with various soloists and a final Let Me Call You Sweetheart finale.
The Pecos Chamber of Commerce endorses the Pecos Barstow Independent School District bond issue of 1.25 million dollars to be voted on May 29 1971. The chamber was assured no tax increase will be needed despite a 19 million dollar oil and gas property valuation rise. The plan funds vocational trades facilities and additional classrooms without raising taxes.
A new law SB 27 requires all children in elementary, secondary schools and higher education to be immunized against diphtheria rubeola rubella tetanus polio and smallpox before next year’s enrollment. Parents should immunize during summer vacation and obtain a statement of immunization from their family doctor to present at enrollment on August 30.
Roberto Hawkins of Pecos is among 612 provisional candidates for degrees at Lamar Tech’s 19th annual commencement on May 22 at Cardinal Stadium. The ceremony marks Lamar Tech’s first outdoor graduation and its final Spring as a college before becoming a university on August 23. Elmer G. Rode notes 562 seek baccalaureate, 50 for masters. 39 bachelor degrees and 14 graduate areas will be awarded. Dr Beington Reed will deliver the principal address at 7 p.m.
Virgil Moore Campbell 72 died of an apparent heart attack yesterday at 12 05 p m in Pecos. Services will be held tomorrow at 2 p m at Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Leslie Smith officiating. Interment in Fairview Cemetery. Born November 14 1898 in Rockwell County he lived in Pecos since age 19 and was a retired Texas Highway Dept equipment superintendent. Survivors include widow Winnie May two sons Wesley Campbell and Joe Campbell five grandchildren and sister Mrs Sadie Draper.
Pecos organizers announce a massive clean up starting May 23 with 700 local youths planned to work on June 5. The program, supported by the Chamber of Commerce and city and county, offers free labor to tidy yards alleys and vacant lots, with volunteers directing cleanup and salt cedar eradication efforts.
