President Nixon began a week in Moscow with hopes to address arms limits trade and space cooperation as Leonid Brezhnev was absent from the airport departure crowds in a tense but ceremonial arrival.
S B Hunt Pecos city water superintendent and civil defense head described local warning limits after a weekend tornado like windstorm. He noted power outages disabled alarms, advised staying indoors, and outlined safer spots and upcoming practice alerts for public awareness.
President Nixon and Rep. Richard White sent telegrams to Pecos Crusade for Christ at Rotary Stadium during a God and Country celebration. Rev. Stricklin warned of moral decay, urged repentance, and about 130 conversions followed. Power outages hit Pecos causing station and cable disruptions, while two tornado-like whirlwinds damaged Cedar Street areas and a teenager helped save a bystander.
Pecos Junior High hosts a spring concert in the high school auditorium Tuesday at eight. The 40 voice choir opens with Eichel Weiss from Sound of Music and Indian Hymn of Praise featuring Laura Boswell on flute. The program includes Were You There and The Drunken Sailor, with Lisa Smith at the piano. The 6th grade beginner band, drawing students from South Pecos and Pecos Elementary, performs Chapel Chimes Tango Toon and Festival. The 107 member symphonic band closes with UIL award pieces The Voice of the Guns Air for Band Festive, plus Lassus Trombone and America the Beautiful, with a 75 cent adult and 50 cent student admission.
Wither's Kindergarten presents its annual end-of-school program Thursday at 7 30 p m in the fellowship hall. The theme is The Young Woman Who Lived in a Shoe and will feature students from 607S Park St. Local families invited to attend.
Almost $1,500 worth of men's suits slacks and coats were stolen from Williams Dept Store at 215 S Oak St on Sunday. Police say the burglar pried the door with a 1 1/2 inch bar and did not disturb the cash register. Loot included sport coats western suits and extra slacks.
Bill Pigman of 1915 Washington St was elected president of the Pecos Band Boosters Club at a recent meeting. Officers named include Mrs. Leon Sharp secretary G C Waltisperger treasurer Mrs Bill Ramsey reporter Gordon Holliday president elect and Mrs Gerald Spray treasurer elect. The club supports all three Pecos bands and invites residents to join or attend meetings.
The Pecos Water Department earned its third consecutive Award of Honor for a five year safety record. Water Superintendent SB Hunt says this means 15 straight years of safe operation. Tex as Section Safety Committee Chair E J Radke notes Pecos was among only fourteen Texas utilities to receive merit or honors.
