Pecos area schools close May 31 with exams, graduations, and festivities. Pecos High School hosts cap and gown events, awards, a senior prom, baccalaureate, and graduation with key speakers. East Pecos Junior High programming runs May 25 26 30. Pecos Junior High final concert May 23. several elementary schools prepare awards and track events at state Special Olympics.
One hundred thirty new low income housing units will rise in Pecos after HUD certification. Bruce Campbell and Son Construction Co. of Temple submitted the low bid of 1 659 100 for the project, with work possible in 30 to 45 days once approved. Construction will occur in three locations and supplement existing Airbase housing, paving way for future expansion.
The Queen Elizabeth 2 with about 2350 aboard continued to Europe after a New York extortion call claiming 350000 dollars for bombs aboard. British bomb disposal teams found no bombs, Cunard officials noting the danger lessened though precautions remain. The ship is due in Cherbourg Saturday.
A parade led by an army color guard features marching bands scouts mounted riders and a Cobra gunship plus two supply helicopters open for public inspection at Pecos Airfield after the parade A static weapons display at Pecos High School followed by a God and Country service at 8 pm The VFW Post 6437 hosts a semi annual buddy poppy sale with Pecos High School band under Dee Dee Davis and Bill Carrico selling poppies by donation The parade starts 10 30 am at the railroad station First and Oak Streets heading south
West Texans packed Rotary field for a Crusade for Christ meeting led by Reese Morrison and Gil Stricklin. Nearly 1,000 young listeners heard a weather-shortened service then moved to Dairy Queen for free ice cream and a Jesus Rally. Morrison shared his faith since meeting Bill Glass four years ago. Stricklin warned of Christ's return and urged repentance, citing Matthew 24 and biblical signs. Nearly 190 people responded, with Pecos High School Auditorium hosting additional services if rain continued. The final night features a God and Country theme with military and local officials attending under the Shiloh music group.
