Two West German freighters, Muensterland and Nordwind, became the canal’s first commercial ships since 1967, traveling from Great Bitter Lake to Port Said in 7 hours. Egyptian workers cheered as Sadat welcomed the opening, part of freeing a rusting fleet of 15 ships trapped by the Arab-Israeli war. The two vessels then planned onward to Hamburg, marking a key reopening after Sadat announced June 5 access for most ships.

Bentsen backs Pecos flood control project plan
Senator Lloyd Bentsen urged Senate action on the President's 1976 budget request of 150000 for flood control planning and 40000 for the transition quarter. The plan would divert floodwaters from Salt Draw into Sand Lake via a canal northwest of Pecos, draining the area and protecting about 24500 acres of land while creating a water recreation area. Army Corps of Engineers studies confirm preliminary field work done and feasibility under review.
