Pecos observes National Youth Week as high school students run campaigns and elect city officials, present programs, visit businesses, and discuss vocations. Trustees of Pecos Independent School District face criticism over delays in building or repairing facilities, with bond issues and budget constraints cited as factors.

County Agent Ted Johnston reports two favorable seed beets tests near Barstow and Balmorhea may make sugar beet seed a new cash crop for Trans-Pecos farmers. Beets reach brooming stage. seed production could reduce imports from Germany and others while roots serve as stock feed.
Work on Reeves county's new 104000 dollar courthouse begins this week with preliminary tasks. Excavation of the basement for the three story building should start early next week using a portable gasoline shovel excavating machine. Twelve carpenters laborers and truck drivers are on site under general contractor J L Har of Wichita Falls.
Pecos senior and junior bands earned superior ratings at the West Texas Band and Orchestra association contests. All entries placed in first division. senior band got excellent in concert playing while junior band won two gold trophies. Director Wesley C. May led both groups. See PECOS BAND, Page 3.
Pecos school board weighs repair versus tear down after two engineers declare the condemned elementary building unsafe. Trost and Sullivan will complete a foundation-focused estimate next week before a final vote at the Wednesday meeting. A bond election and financing for either option are expected to be discussed, with potential action within 20 days.
Pecos high school junior Bobbie Lee Davis won the Chamber of Commerce contest eliminations held Monday morning in the high school assembly. Albert Sisk served as sole judge. other entrants were Patricia Green William Watson and Margaret Gardner. Davis will represent Pecos at the West Texas Chamber convention in Brownwood May 10 12 where prizes include silver loving cups college scholarships and cash awards for top distances.
The Pecos Rodeo committee purchased 70 head of stock this week, rising to 100 for the eighth annual rodeo and celebration on July 3 and 4. Buck Jackson announced. They bought 30 cows and calves from George Daniels at Toyah and 10 Mexican steers from Pat Wadley of Pecos for milking, roping, tying, and bulldogging contests.
Mrs Stephen Millett, guest of Mr and Mrs Pat Hill, spoke by telephone to her mother aboard the S S Queen Mary in New York harbor. The call from Pecos and Northwestern Telephone Co branch took under four minutes and the lines were clear. She sought the talk before her mother sailed for the coronation.
Mrs Keith Camp suffered an acid burn to one eye this week and was treated by a specialist in El Paso. She remained in a hospital there with a physician indicating a full recovery without serious complications. latest report said she was considerably improved.
Light rain fell Thursday morning and afternoon with overcast skies. Heavier showers were reported in the western area, likely benefiting cantaloupe farms with good rainfall.

Pecos celebrates National Youth Week with a student led election. Jack Oglesby wins the mayoral post amid a townwide civic program sponsored by the Pecos Rotary Club. Other youth officials include city marshal Billy Cole Roberson and city secretary Elizabeth Stephen.
A Wednesday court session led by Mayor Jack Oglesby and city officials settled long standing scores. Ben Colwell faced a trash dumping charge and was fined a malted milk. Clarence Mount paid $1 after misreading a meter for 70 months. Jim Sample admitted to adding water to gasoline and was fined $1. Veto Norrell received free dance tickets for speeding and resisting an officer amid a crowd.
Hollis Hurley six year old son of Mr and Mrs Charles Huriey died at a local hospital on Friday April 30 after a short illness. Born in Sans Angelo Hollis had not lived in Pecos long and was in the first grade. Funeral services were held Friday with interment Saturday in Robert Lee.
Band students from Pecus plan entries for the National Band Association contest on May 14 in Oklahoma City. Marjorie Slack earns a clarinet solo, Eugene Hendon enters drum major twirling, and a clarinet trio with Floyd Brownlee and Evolene Howell is proposed. Director Wesley C. May submitted the entry. Marjorie Slack travels with Mr and Mrs Maron Slack and their daughter. All three specialties won superior ratings at the recent Lubbock contest.
The Pecos bands opened a two series run with a Thursday evening concert on the public library north lawn. About 30 band students performed as the 7:30 to 8:20 program entertained local residents.
