The world faces renewed risk as East Germany's long time Communist chief Walter Ulbricht leaves power. The divided Berlin frontier remains the flashpoint where American and Soviet influence confronts, with both sides seeking to ease tensions.
Tensions rise as official rhetoric tightens between Washington and Beijing despite a friendly table tennis exchange last month. Officials on both sides prize goodwill but now emphasize harsher tones and unresolved disagreements.
Literaturnaya Gazeta charges McKinney H. Russell, U S Embassy cultural affairs counsellor, with recruiting Soviets to spy for the United States in alleged exchange program espionage. The embassy calls the accusations unfounded and says Russell’s contacts were normal and proper.
Pakistan has dispatched three special envoys to explain the civil war in East Pakistan to European and Western Hemisphere governments. The government argues that India bears responsibility for the rebellion that threatens to split the country geographically and politically.
The Justice Department plans to seek a court order to require James T. Ling to sever ties with Ling-Temco-Vought as a condition for approving the Okonite Co sale to Omega-Alpha. Ling heads Omega-Alpha and seeks to buy an LTV unit being compelled by an antitrust suit, after previously serving as LTV chairman.
CAPE KENNEDY Fla AP An American spy satellite blasted into space to monitor Soviet and Red Chinese missile tests and provide near instant warning of a long range attack. The Titan 3 rocket carried the 1800 pound satellite to a near stationary orbit 24000 miles above Southeast Asia. Launch had been postponed 24 hours due to minor technical problems.
In St. Jean Vianney near Chicoutimi Quebec Civil Defense reports at least 20 dead and about 20 missing after a Tuesday night earth cave in. Rescue teams search the debris for survivors and identify victims.
Western European national banks including the West German Central Bank and banks in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Austria and Belgium halted trading in U S dollars to curb speculators swapping dollars for marks ahead of a Bonn government revaluation. Some banks stopped dealing in the mark, others paused all foreign currency trades.
Gary Indiana Mayor Richard G. Hatcher, a pioneer as one of America's first black mayors, wins a landslide in the Democratic primary for a second term. The 37 year old challenger to the regular party organization is defeated, marking a repeat upset in four years.
The East Pecos Junior High Band won a trophy for outstanding band and a first division sight reading plaque at the Sanderson Band Festival on May 1. Eight bands competed with East Pecos earning top honors for the first time in school history. McCamey also earned Division I ratings while Alpine took Division II in concert and sight reading. Comstock Junior High earned I in concert and sight reading in class C. Sanderson achieved Division I ratings in class CC.
Last night South Pecos Elementary and Bar stow Elementary School beginner bands performed for parents and guests in the South Pecos cafeteria. Directed by Pecos Eagle Band director Bill Carrico the program featured Ameri ca Festival Little Irish Suite Hansel and Gretel Overture Little Scotch Suite and Tango Tune with a short PTA business meeting and plans for new officers.
Reeves County trustees plan an open session meeting to reconsider annexing Toyah school district into the Pecos Barstow district. John Dorr says proper notice posted and public access ensured. Court of Civil Appeals in Austin previously ruled against the Reeves County trustees, overturning Judge Starley who had upheld the annexation.
Dr. Bill H. Amstead of Odessa Texas will address the Pecos Rotary Club at their Thursday meeting. He is president of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and helped advance a master campus plan approved February 12, 197. The program also notes Open Meetings law impact and local school topics.
