Buddy Delp's Derby Moment with Spectacular Bid

AP Special Correspondent Will Grimsley profiles Buddy Delp, trainer of Spectacular Bid, as Kentucky Derby No 105 looms. Delp faces scrutiny whether Bid triumphs or falters, with a hard‑nosed, plainspoken persona shaped by years around the track and a fiery personality toward his jockey Ron Franklin. Delp’s 46 years old Maryland birth background, Laurel fire setback, and laborious climb to late success paint a gritty portrait of a trainer under bright spotlight.

Astros beat Cardinals 4-1 as Reynolds extends streak

In St Louis the Astros improved defense and pitching set the tone for an 4-1 win over the Cardinals. Craig Reynolds, newcomer and ex Mariners shortstop, pushed his hitting streak to 13 games though a Reynolds single that went for naught did not score. Pitcher Phil Niekro delivered a strong start as Houston benefited from winter trade acquisitions for surprising early season success.

Landry pleased with Cowboys draft bonanza in first rounds

Dallas coach Tom Landry hailed a strong NFL draft for the Cowboys after two early picks, center Robert Shaw of Tennessee and cornerback Aaron Mitchell of Nevada Las Vegas, expressing confidence Shaw can play guard too and Mitchell brings size and aggression. Shaw, first Cowboys opening-round center since 1966, eyed late second or third-round pick, while Mitchell competes at left cornerback against Mark Washington or Dennis Thurman. Landry noted four to five rookie spots and predicted competition, with St Louis as a tough NFC East rival after drafting a backfield.
