North Vietnamese forces pressed a major assault in the far north driving South Vietnamese troops from two bases and possibly a third. US air raids increased inside North Vietnam as MIG21s were shot down and a convoy of American helicopters was lost. Commanders raised alert levels, and Saigon briefly ordered Americans off the streets before rescinding the directive. In Laos and along the Ho Chi Minh trail, air and sea bombardments continued as aircrews reported several enemy losses and mounting artillery fire near the DMZ.
